Condom Storage: Heat, Wallets and Expiry Dates

How heat, friction, sunlight and expiry dates affect condom storage decisions.

What to know

Condom choice is not only about a product name or thickness. Fit, material, lubrication, storage and correct use all affect comfort and practical performance. Check the information supplied with the product and make sure the package is intact and within its expiry date before use.

Practical guidance

Choose a condom that feels secure without painful tightness or repeated slipping. If the product is made from natural rubber latex, avoid oil-based lubricants unless the manufacturer specifically says they are compatible. Water- and silicone-based lubricants are commonly used with latex condoms, but always check the lubricant label.

Use a new condom for every act of intercourse. Open the wrapper carefully, avoid sharp objects, place the condom on before genital contact, and follow the instructions supplied with the pack.
